§ 02.2How it works

Three fields - fill in only one.

FAQ →
01 · Choose rate

20%, 9%, or 0%.

Choosing the right percentage is very important. The standard tax for most goods and services is 20%. The reduced tax of 9% applies only to three things: hotels, books (paper and electronic), and baby food and diapers. It is important to know that restaurants and catering are now taxed at 20% again. A 0% tax is used only for the export of goods abroad.

02 · Enter amount

Amount excluding VAT, VAT only, or final price

Simply enter the amount you have. Do you have an invoice for 1,200 EUR with tax included? Write it in the third field. Are you preparing an offer for a client and want to see exactly how much the VAT is? Write the price in the first field.

03 · See result

Everything is calculated instantly

The three numbers are calculated immediately on the screen without you even pressing a button. Keep in mind that this calculator only gives you a quick reference - for issuing real invoices, it is best to consult with your accountant.

§ 01

When is it used the 9% reduced tax?

+

By law, this lower tax applies permanently only to three things: hotels (and campsites), books (paper and electronic), and baby food and diapers. Everything else is taxed at the standard rate of 20%. If you are in doubt about a specific product or service, it is best to consult an accountant.

§ 02

Are restaurants and cafes taxed at 9% VAT?

+

No. This is a common misconception. The lower tax for restaurants was a temporary measure during COVID, which ended at the end of 2024. Since 2025, food and drinks in restaurants are back to 20% VAT. There is only one exception - if you are staying in a hotel and the food is included in the total price of the stay (without being listed on a separate line), then the entire package can be charged at 9%.

§ 03

How to calculate VAT, what if I only have the final price?

+

With a 20% tax, you simply divide the final price by 1.20 to get the net amount, and the difference is the VAT itself. At 9%, you divide by 1.09. Our calculator does this completely automatically - just enter the final price in the third field.

§ 04

What is the difference between 0% VAT and sale without VAT?

+

In both cases, you do not charge VAT to your client, but the rules are different. At 0% (e.g., for exports abroad), the state gives you the right to recover the tax on the things you bought for your business. For sales without VAT (such as some educational, health, or financial services), you do not have the right to reclaim the tax from the state.

§ 05

What are the deadlines for VAT filing and payment?

+

The documents and payment to the state must be completed no later than the 14th of the following month. Tax returns must be submitted every month, even if you have not earned any money at all and have zero values.

§ 06

Can I use the calculator for invoices in euros?

+

Since we now work exclusively with euros in Bulgaria, the calculator is set directly for this currency. For the official issuance of invoices to other countries, there are some more specific rules, for which it is best to consult with us.

§ 07

What does „tax credit“ mean and when do I use it?

+

This is your right to deduct the tax you paid on business purchases from the tax you owe the state on your sales. To do this, you must have an official invoice from a VAT-registered company, the goods must be used for your business, and you must claim this right within one year.
